According to the United States Department of Education, there is a nationwide shortage of teachers prepared to support students whose English is not their first language. In New York State, 8.9% of the public school population alone were labeled English Language Learners in 2020 (), and this percentage is expected to grow.
Through our 30-credit master鈥檚 program, you will gain essential knowledge and learn effective pedagogical strategies to meet the diverse needs of English Language Learners. The curriculum includes lesson plan development framed by cultural/diversity competencies so that teachers can help future students learn and thrive. The College also offers a 18-credit Post-Master鈥檚 certificate in TESOL option.

Featured Courses
Foundation methods course which includes: guiding principles and methodology in various approaches to the teaching of second languages including teaching reading and writing, developing auditory comprehension and oral production, and other human development processes and variations on language and literacy development.
The emphasis of the course includes curriculum development, instructional planning, and multiple research-validated instructional strategies for teaching students with the full range of abilities and means for understanding the needs of students with disabilities.
This course offers a supervised experience assessing Standards-based practices and strategies related to planning, implementing, and managing the Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESOL) and content instruction, including classroom organization, teaching strategies for developing and integrating language skills, and choosing and adapting classroom resources to support students.
