BIO

鈥淥ur students are wonderful, kind and here to learn. They care. They鈥檙e fun.鈥

Dr. Ben Wagner grew up in a small town in northeastern Ohio and knew he wanted to attend a small college. He enrolled in Ohio鈥檚 Denison University, where he took a psychology course as a freshman. Psychology turned out to be one of his lifelong passions.

He says psychology was an exciting pursuit for him because the career paths were endless. At first, he says, he thought about studying clinical psychology and establishing his own practice. But, after an intensive independent study with one of his professors, he developed an interest in politics and voter behavior. So, Dr. Wagner entered the social psychology Ph.D. program at The Ohio State University, where he studied and taught for eight years.

鈥淎t the time, I was really interested in the research aspect of psychology and thought I鈥檇 eventually work at a research institution,鈥 Dr. Wagner says. 鈥淥nce I started teaching, though, I thought, 鈥榃ow. This is so much more rewarding than doing research in a lab by myself and not talking to anybody.鈥 I realized I had promise as a teacher.鈥

Dr. Wagner still has a soft spot in his heart for research and says he is most proud of his independent research collaborations with students on topics including the prediction of teacher evaluations based on student personality, and the link between narcissism and social media behavior. He has even taken students to present at national psychology conferences.

As much as he likes research at the college level, Dr. Wagner says he is happy to be working at a college where teaching is the primary focus.

鈥淚 interviewed at three other colleges, and I could have talked myself into working at any of them, but none of them were an exact fit,鈥 Dr. Wagner says. 鈥淲hen I interviewed at St. Thomas Aquinas, I knew right away that I would fit in. I鈥檝e been here four years, and it鈥檚 only gotten better.鈥

In addition to teaching a full slate of courses 鈥 from intro to psychology and experimental psychology to psychology and the law and personality 鈥 Dr. Wagner co-advises the college鈥檚 Psychology Club and the Gender and Sexuality Alliance.

In his free time, Dr. Wagner enjoys cooking vegetarian and vegan food, playing the piano (he鈥檚 classically trained), and spending time with his lovable rescue dog, Barney, A.K.A. Barnold, A.K.A. Barntina Aguilera.

Trained in experimental social psychology, my research has focused primarily on how people鈥檚 social and political attitudes form and change. I am particularly interested in the role of emotion in persuasion, but have also explored moral judgment, stereotyping and prejudice, and the impact of fictional narratives on our attitudes and beliefs. My true passion, however, is in teaching and interacting with my students. I am the Faculty Advisor for the Psych Club, the Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA), and Psi Chi (an honorary society for Psychology students), so do not hesitate to ask me about these student organizations. Please also send me an email or stop by my office if you would like to chat about vegan food, 鈥90s and 鈥00s hip hop and R&B, current events, RuPaul鈥檚 Drag Race, or American Horror Story. Or if you would like to hear stories about my neurotic but lovable rescue dog, Barney (A.K.A. Lord Barnabus, A.K.A. Barncat, A.K.A. Barntina McBride).
